Today we celebrate the birthday of Harry Houdini, born in 1874. He was an honest magician who insisted that his magic did not involve psychic stuff, and that psychic powers do not exist, and, as a result, he lost a few True Believer friends. And now that our mythical man-god has been successfully revived for another year, we can pretend to get back to normal, whatever to heck "normal" is. This week is our church's turn to do "Calvert Safe Nights" which is a project to provide a place for homeless folks to stay overnight. My volunteer role will be to haul the night's trash to the dump every morning. Now, folks, I suspect that the main reason most homeless folks are homeless is that our society denies them the opportunity to be as productive as they can be, just because they're a bit less capable than the rest of us. True social justice would give all people, even the least capable of us, an opportunity to do something worthwhile. But religions in general do not favor true social justice because that would probably render charity mostly unnecessary, and we like the egocentric feeling of providing charity and smugly reckoning ourselves oh so superior for doing so. But anyhow, this morning is an almost-frost, and tomorrow morning another one, and no predicted overnight low below 40 from that day henceforth, so tomorrow the garden watering system gets turned on. Last frost date advanced from April 12 to March 25? And horticultural zone boundaries 200 miles farther north than they were 40 years ago? And a few folks with their heads stuck up where the sun doesn't shine are still denying Global Warming? Gimme a break! Oh well, after 30% chance of rain with possibly a bit of snow this morning, it's gonna be a great day. Happy Monday! OrneryPest |

Oh by the way, if you're one of those insufferable snooty folks who think
you've just gotta have a (gasp) banner (shudder) to link to me,
I suppose I'll let you download this one for the purpose, if you really insist.
