Today we celebrate the birthday of Artemas Martin, born in 1835. He was an amateur mathematician who didn't quit his day job.

Well, folks, I guess we're now a one-cat household. Mercury died early this morning. At least we think he's canonically dead. He's completely unresponsive except for a few muscle spasms in response to tweaking certain key acupuncture sites, which, I think, continues to happen for a few hours after death.

So I guess I'll find a place out back of the garden to bury him. A couple of our previous cats are buried there.

We'll probably just let Bruce be our only cat for the rest of his life.

Back when Herkimer died, we got Bruce and Mercury as kittens before Esmeralda died, and Esmeralda started showing a mean streak, being nasty toward the kittens. They eventually learned to get along, but it would have been simpler if we had just let Esmeralda live out her last year or two in solitude.
