Today we celebrate a feast day in honor of Saint Philip Benizi. We're scheduled to use green altar covers. It looks like Father D, our head boss preacher, is gonna do the sermon.

Yesterday we had such wonderfully nice stormy weather. I think we're experiencing the edge effects from Hurricane Whatsizname who's cruising up the Atlantic. Frequent power hickups have rendered it auspicious to leave our computer shut off most of the time.

I think today is gonna be more of the same.

And then next week our congregation starts preparing for a 325-th birthday celebration for Middleham Chapel.

The current Middleham Chapel was built in 1748 and we have reliable documentation of that date, including the cost and how the money was raised and who the building contractor was. It replaced an earlier building that we don't have any clear documentation about.

However, we have two documents that, when put together, suggest a founding date of 1684.

The first is a personal letter that the date has been obliterated from, saying how they went to the very first service held at the brand new Middleham Chapel Of Ease, and they're happy that there's finally a nice church in their neighborhood, and Father So-And-So preached the sermon.

The second is the records of Christ Church on Broomes Island Road, whereupon is recorded that Father So-And-So did his Circuit Rider tour of duty, preaching at all the Chapels Of Ease, in 1684.

So we're pretty confident about the 1684 date. Hey, a lot of world history is based on shakier evidence than that!

And to think that, in 325 years of faithfully doing our mystic incantations, we've never been able to wangle God into sending a team of angels down to mow the graveyard for us. All we've seen is some vaporous ghost named Elizabeth who only appears when cars turn in and out of the Frying Pan Restaurant parking lot and their headlights glitter amongst the dew-soaked cobwebs hanging in the trees.

Happy Mystic Incantations!
