Today we celebrate the birthday of Oscar Wilde, born in 1854. He wrote a buncha stuff.

At one point in his life, a person of debaucherous moral character in a position of earthly power accused him of being gay, which was, in his time, reckoned to be a serious crime, so he spent a coupla years in prison.

Philosophers through the ages have noticed the high correlation between earthly authority and moral debauchery. Lord Acton once remarked that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. One of the Great Rabbinical Debates of medieval Judaism was whether earthly authority causes moral debauchery or whether moral debauchery is a prerequisite for possessing earthly authority.

Well anyhow, yesterday was the first day our new heat pump, installed last spring, shoulda come on but didn't. It's been cooling just fine all summer. So we called Winters Sheet Metal. Over the phone, the technician talked me through a diagnostic, and I discovered that two secret circuit breakers I hadn't known about before had popped. So I reset them. The unit came on. The tech said to call back if they pop again for no apparent reason.

Meanwhile, my Tagged account (aka Facebook Junior with a Side Order of Spam) keeps getting flooded with matchmaking requests by women younger than my son, in spite of how my profile now clearly states that I'm 66 years old and married. I wonder how many of these are fronts for child-porn dealers.

Two of my "friends", Ken L and Mary Q, are actually friends. I have no idea which cabinetry fixture the rest of them popped out of.

But anyhow, it looks like it's gonna rain all day again. Yawn. Well, at least the house is fulla good books and there's an indoor bike that doesn't go anywhere and some heavy things to pick up and put down.

Happy Rain Dancing!
