Oh by the way, folks, My more serious diary: |
Today we make fun of Shahnawaz Farooqi. (Sorry, can't get the link to work) He's an Islamic "scholar" (if you can say that scholarship is even possible within Islam, or any other religion, for that matter). He claims that the difference between the West and Islam is that the West depends too much on observation, logic, and rational thought, but Islam is superior because it depends on hallucination. I fully agree with him that observation, logic, and rational thought are limited and do not permit us to know everything. But it's the best we've got. He's wrong, of course, about how Islam differs from the West about depending on hallucination. Christianity also depends on hallucination, possibly to an even greater degree than Islam. That's why, along about the 18-th century or thereabouts, we invented the so-called Enlightenment. About half of the Christians in the world have managed to sorta halfway accept Enlightenment philosophy, but acceptance of Enlightenment by Muslims is practically nil. But the limitations of Enlightenment philosophy can't possibly justify resorting to hallucination to find truth. Well anyhow, last night's church pot luck dinner was 13 people including both preachers. The presento afterwards was a movie about how close a lot of Americans really are to the poverty line. Unfortunately, their treatment of the poverty problem was superficial. And so today looks like it's gonna be a good day to mow the lawn at St Peters Chapel this morning, then MrsPest and I have a bit of a quest to do in Baltimore this afternoon. Happy Thursday!
