Today we celebrate the birthday of Ralph Waldo Emerson, born in 1803. He was one of America's foremost nineteenth century forward thinkers.

As best as I've been able to determine, he never gave himself any fake he-man nickname, as most modern dudes named Ralph seem to wanna do, like maybe call themself Buck or Spike or Skip or something like that.

Anyhow, yesterday's pre-move household downsizing for our friend went suitably well. Vast quantities of stuff got hauled to various and sundry charities, and some to the dump.

And over on somebody's FaceBook page, a nice little discussion has arisen as to the qualities you enjoy while driving different kinds of cars, such as whether driving a Ford Focus keeps you in focus.

My father drove a Ford Focus during his last coupla years of live but it didn't seem to help keep him in focus very much, in particular, at the intersection of MD Rt 4 and Westphalia Avenue, about a hundred yards before the interchange onto the beltway.

At this point, Rt 4 widens out into lots and lots of lanes. The rightmost lane is right-turn-only onto Westphalia Avenue. The next lane is optional right turn onto Westphalia Avenue and then if you go straight it becomes right-turn-only onto the beltway.

It's well-marked. All you've gotta do is read the signs far enough ahead. But my father always ended up getting befuddled and taking Westphalia Avenue for about a mile and a half before discovering he wasn't on the beltway, then he had to back-track to get onto the beltway.

So much for a Ford Focus keeping you in focus.

Anyhow, our ancient and ailing cat Fish Breath is still alive. We don't know how he's surviving.

Happy Saturday!
